7.26.21 - A Chase bank returns to a Bronx neighborhood devastated by looting, shocking business owners

'Last summer looters ransacked 31 stores on Burnside Avenue, one of the Bronx’s poorest neighborhoods, and ripped out the ATMs of the street’s last bank. The bank closed for good a few weeks later.'

'“It felt like we didn’t matter anymore, that we were just another struggling Bronx neighborhood the financial system could ignore, ” said Jessica Betancourt, owner of Bronx Optical Center.'

'Burnside Avenue is in vastly better shape today. Few storefronts are vacant and business hums at clothing shops, restaurants, and bodegas. A Dollar Stop Shop and a health clinic recently opened, and today brought a big milestone: The opening ceremony for a new Chase branch.'
