7.23.15 - State officials say heat wave proves point about energy grid

"The state's energy grid was made to handle heat waves, but that's why it is so expensive and inefficient. To meet the sudden demand, energy usage soars, often to record levels. The most recent record was set in July 2013 at 33,956 megawatts, according to the New York Independent System Operator, the state's grid operator. The average daily demand in 2014 was 18,268 megawatts. But on Monday, demand spiked to 30,575, the highest level so far in 2015, according to NYISO."
