1.13.17 - Indian Point Closure Won’t Leave New York in the Dark

"Although the Indian Point Energy Center supplies enough energy to power up to two million homes in New York and Westchester County, experts say there are alternative sources coming on line to fill the gap when the nuclear plant closes and these alternative plans have been in development for some time."

"According to the New York Independent System Operator, the nonprofit which manages operation of the state’s bulk-electric system, total energy produced by Indian Point was 16,421.3 gigawatt hours for 2015, the most recent figures available. That equals about 11.5% of total in-state electric energy."

"New York state officials say the Champlain Hudson Power Express project will begin generating about 1,200 megawatts of hydropower coming from Quebec, Canada, by 2021. And hydro- and wind-power projects in Western New York will begin producing 1,000 megawatts by 2023, state officials said."
