5.23.19 - Letter: NY must pursue power grid of future

'The New York Independent System Operator, the entity responsible for operating the power grid and administering competitive wholesale energy markets in New York, recently released its annual Power Trends report on the state of the grid.'

'In order to meet the state's energy policy goals, more transmission will be needed to deliver renewable power from where it is generated to where it is consumed. As discussed in the report, three major transmission projects have been approved by the NYISO and are working their way through permitting processes. Once online, each will significantly expand the grid's ability to deliver carbon-free electricity produced upstate to downstate load centers. However, more transmission will be needed between upstate and downstate and to deliver electricity from offshore wind.'

'New York state is a national leader in the pursuit of emissions reductions and renewable technology. As policymakers push for rapid and widespread change in how energy is produced and consumed, the NYISO believes competitive wholesale electricity markets must continue to serve as the strongest platform from which we pursue the grid of the future. The NYISO will continue to use Power Trends to educate policymakers, investors and the public on the NYISO's role in that future grid.'
