5.15.17 - New law protecting freelancers goes into effect

"Employers must sign written contracts for freelance work valued at $800 or more, either for a single job or as a total for services contracted within a 120-day period. The contracts must include a payment date for the freelancer; if they don't, businesses must pay within 30 days of the completion of the work."

"A plaintiff who proves a one-time violation of the new rules could be awarded $250 in damages. Employers found to have a pattern of violating them face civil penalties of up to $25,000."
