3.3.20 - Bail reform rollback would harm black New Yorkers, study finds

'Black New Yorkers would be hurt most if the Legislature rolls back the state’s bail reform laws, a new study says.'

'Before the reforms took effect Jan. 1, black New Yorkers were jailed pretrial at higher rates than whites even when accused of the same level of crime, says the study commissioned by criminal justice reform organization FWD.us.'

'The group studied data compiled by the state between January 2016 and June 2017.'

'In nonviolent felony cases brought in New York City, white people were released 63% of the time compared with 61% for black people.'
