1.6.21 - Cuomo to push legal pot in 2021 State of the State address
'Gov. Andrew Cuomo confirmed Wednesday that he will again call for the legalization of recreational marijuana as part of his upcoming 2021 State of the State Address.'
'“This is the year where we need the funding, and a lot of New Yorkers are struggling. I think this year will give us the momentum to get over the finish line,” he said at a morning press briefing. “Massachusetts has legalized marijuana, New Jersey’s going to legalize marijuana, so what are we really talking about at this point?”'
'Cuomo further cast marijuana legalization as social justice issue, arguing that “too many people have been imprisoned and incarcerated and punished” for possessing or using it.'
'“Too many of those people are Black and Latino and poor — it’s exaggerated the injustice of the justice system,” he said.'
