08.09.2025 Happy 10th birthday to the Mesonet, UAlbany’s early-warning weather system now used by the whole state
ALBANY — Ten years ago Saturday, the University at Albany constructed the first weather station of what is now the largest early-warning system weather network in the country.
Enclosed behind a fence in a park in Schuylerville, with funding from FEMA after Superstorm Sandy, the first station gathered essential weather data every five minutes. There are now stations every 17 miles throughout the state, used by National Weather Service meteorologists, emergency managers and even farmers. All of the stations are still operated and maintained by the University at Albany.
