07.23.2026 NYISO Report Highlights Need for New Generation and Transmission Investment to Meet Growing Demand and State Policy Targets

Rensselaer, NY – The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) today released its 2025-2044 System & Resource Outlook (The Outlook), a long-term planning assessment that finds New York will need substantial new investment in reliable generation and transmission infrastructure to serve growing electricity demand and state policy targets.

The Outlook evaluates several scenarios reflecting different assumptions about demand growth, resource development, technology availability, and public policy implementation. Across those futures, the analysis shows that demand growth is outpacing resource additions; firm, flexible resources remain essential; and transmission capability increasingly determines whether new resources can deliver power to consumers when and where needed.
