07.10.2025 Schumer decries $3M cut to NY’s severe weather early-detection network
ALBANY — After three major storms pummeled New York more than a decade ago, causing billions of dollars in damage and the loss of at least 60 lives, the state created a network intended to detect severe weather earlier.
That venture, called the Mesonet, has been funded through a combination of federal and state spending, including support from the state University at Albany, where it’s headquartered.
But one source of funding has now been canceled by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which awarded $3 million to Mesonet researchers two years ago to develop new emergency management tools using data from the statewide system.
