State health regulators are ramping up oversight of new nursing home owners after a rise in inexperienced operators and for-profit flips have sparked concerns about patient care.
The Public Health and Health Planning Council, a state board that regulates nursing home ownership changes, launched a committee last month to review the criteria and evaluation of incoming nursing home operators. The committee is tasked with making recommendations to raise requirements for new owners, conduct more rigorous financial reviews and keep a closer eye on related-party transactions, a practice where owners hide profits in a network of businesses affiliated with their nursing home.
