02.04.2026 Hochul, Sherrill reach Port Authority leadership deal

New York and New Jersey's governors have ended their standoff over the leadership of the Port Authority, according to two people familiar with the negotiations granted anonymity to discuss the politically sensitive matter.

The deal, which follows a Monday phone call between the Democratic leaders, clears the way for Kathryn Garcia, a former top aide to New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, to lead the agency as executive director. It also clears the way for Jean Roehrenbeck, a former top aide to New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill, to become the agency’s No. 2.

The Port Authority’s board is expected to approve the moves at a Thursday board meeting.
