Calvary Hospital (2025)
Calvary Hospital, New York’s only federally designated Extended Neoplastic Disease Care Hospital, delivers specialized palliative and end-of-life care to adults with advanced cancer and terminal conditions. Despite its critical role in patient care, its Medicaid rate was rooted in 2005 cost data, meaning reimbursement had long ceased to reflect actual operating costs.
Without an updated reimbursement structure, Calvary faced mounting financial risks that threatened the continuity of essential services. The hospital’s inability to keep pace with current cost realities posed a systemic challenge - potentially reverberating across the broader hospital and Medicaid infrastructure in New York.
Through strategic advocacy with the key members of the legislature and Division of Budget $6.9 million in funding was successfully incorporated into the Department of Health's SFY26 Enacted State Budget to support Calvary's compassionate care mission in the near term. The targeted outreach and education helped to raise the profile of Calvary Hospital as a world-class palliative and end of life care facility amongst NYS leadership in healthcare.
